12/31/02 - New Video and DVD Releases
There are some interesting video/DVD releases slated for December 31, 2002, including "Hey Arnold! The Movie" and "XXX." On January 1, 2003, "Barbershop" will be released on video/DVD. 12/29/02 - Top 5 Foreign Films Released on DVD in 2002
Here are my favorite foreign films released on DVD in 2002. Most happen to be available as Criterion Collection DVDs with good special features, but my choices are based mainly on the artistic quality of the movies. Note that the year in parentheses refers to the movie's original theatrical release. Here's my idiosyncratic list of the best foreign films released on DVD in 2002.

12/26/02 - Pick of the Week: "War and Peace" DVD
I can’t say "War and Peace" (1956) is an example of great filmmaking, but I do think it's worth watching. I have to admit the movie doesn't have a compelling narrative drive, but I still enjoyed it as historical spectacle. I believe if you can watch this film in the same mindset required by silent movies or grand opera, you'll probably find it a rewarding experience. There are some interesting video/DVD releases scheduled for December 24, 2002, including "The Adventures of Pluto Nash," "Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever," and "Trapped." On December 27, 2002, "Blood Work" starring Clint Eastwood will be released on video/DVD. Other releases of interest this week include "Dot" and "Trois 2: Pandora's Box." 12/22/02 - Top 10 DVDs Released in 2002
So many good DVDs were released in 2002 that I find it difficult to choose the ten best. Nevertheless, I've compiled a list of ten of my favorites that includes both contemporary and classic films released on DVD in 2002. Please note that the year in parentheses refers to the movie's original theatrical release. Here's my idiosyncratic list of what I feel are the best DVD films released in 2002.

12/19/02 - Pick of the Week: "Minority Report" Two-Disc DVD Set

12/16/02 - Preview/Review: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Season Three" DVDs
I enjoyed the entertaining mix of horror, comedy, and drama in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Third Season" and expect fans of this popular TV show to like the DVDs even better than I did. Read a brief overview and review of the DVDs.

I love sparkling dialogue delivered by top-notch actors, and that's what you get when you watch "Glengarry Glen Ross" (1992), now available on DVD in a two-disc Special Edition put out by Artisan. The dialogue was written by the great American playwright David Mamet and delivered by a dream-team ensemble cast that includes Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, and Kevin Spacey. Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, "Pulp Fiction" (1994) was a box office smash and a huge critical success in its theatrical release. Later, videotape, laserdisc, and barebones DVD editions of the movie proved popular as well. Now Miramax has released a Collector's Edition version of "Pulp Fiction" as a two-disc DVD set containing lots of extras, and when I watched it at home recently, I was again impressed by what a great movie it is. 08/30/02 - Product Review: "The Rookie" DVD

I liked the look of this film, and I enjoyed its use of Rat Pack-style music. Ian Hart and Kelly Macdonald make an appealing screen couple, and I found the movie's ending to be very satisfying.
