"Joy Ride" DVD
Joy Ride - DVD cover
"Joy Ride"
DVD
Guide Rating -
Pros  •  Taut thriller with a fun B-movie sensibility
•  Exciting action sequences
•  Occasional dark humor provides comic relief
Cons  •  Towards the end the story goes over the top and loses credibility
•  Rusty Nail was too much of a comic-book villain for my taste
•  Film loses energy toward the end and might have benefited from tighter editing
The Bottom Line - "Joy Ride" is a taught thriller with a B-movie sensibility. The film's story goes so over the top towards the end that it lost credibility with me. But the movie delivers enough of an adrenaline rush and campy fun I still recommend it, but only as a popcorn movie.

"Joy Ride" DVD
This taut thriller stars Paul Walker, Leelee Sobieski, and Steve Zahn. Lewis (Walker) is a college student who makes a cross-country automobile trip, picking up his brother Fuller (Zahn) and his friend Venna (Sobieski) along the way. They pull a prank on a truck driver who calls himself Rusty Nail, but things go awry and a motel occupant is severely beaten as a result. It's not long before Lewis, Venna, and Fuller hear Rusty Nail on their CB radio and realize that he is after them. Much of the rest of the movie revolves around a series of hair-raising incidents where the psychotic trucker uses his huge tractor-trailer rig to try to run down the three young people. Although "Joy Ride" has a few funny moments, it's basically an unusually well-crafted thriller with a B-movie sensibility. "Joy Ride" is an entertaining film with charismatic stars; however, I found that the last third of the film went so over the top the story lost all credibility with me. But even though I stopped buying into what was happening on screen, I still kept watching, perhaps out of sheer morbid fascination. Overall, the film delivered enough of an adrenaline rush and campy fun I still recommend "Joy Ride," but only if you are in the mood for a popcorn movie that's flawed but fun.
